Frequently Asked Questions : Lessons

Where are lessons taught?
All lessons are taught out of Capitol Music Center at 1006 NE 50th Street, Seattle, WA 98105.

How frequent are lessons?
Once per week.

When is my child old enough to begin music lessons?
The right age to begin music lessons varies greatly. Generally, flute lessons may begin as early as seven. Your child must be able to pay attention for half an hour, understand basic concepts such as addition and the letters of the alphabet, and be able to comfortably hold a flute. Younger flute students may also require a curved headjoint. If you are unsure about whether your child is ready to begin lessons, please contact me for a free consultation.

What do I need to bring to the first lesson?
Your instrument, a folder or binder to hold the lesson and assignment sheets, and any exercise books or music you regularly play from or would like to learn. Intermediate students should also have a metronome and tuner.

Frequently Asked Questions : Special Events

When should I hire a musician?
Generally speaking, the earlier the better. If I need to order music, it can take up to six weeks to arrive. However, if you are flexible in your music choices and need someone last minute, I will often be able to step in depending on scheduling.

What will you wear?
I have a variety of performance wear ranging from casual to formal. I will check the color and style with the couple at the consultation.

I know exactly what piece I want but I don't have the music. Can you get it?
I am able to order most music. Additional charges may apply if the music is especially expensive or difficult to get. In such a situation, I will be in communication with you regarding the cost. Generally speaking, however, I will be able to order most pieces at no additional charge to you.

I don't know exactly what pieces I want, but I have an idea of the theme.
That's perfectly fine! I am happy to make recommendations. I love working with couples to incorporate their personalities and creativity into their special day!

Do you do outdoor weddings?
Yes, I do. If it rains, however, I will only be able to play if there is a secure, water-proof shelter, as water is very damaging to the flute. You may also wish to consider amplification if you are on a large site, as the sound can get lost outdoors. You will be responsible for renting and arranging for the set-up of the system; please note that most Seattle parks only allow amplified music with a permit.

Will you play with other musicians?
If you have other musicians you wish to play at your wedding, I will be happy to play with them. I will generally charge an additional $50 to cover an hour of rehearsal time in order to meet with the other musician and run through the music.

Is there anything I need to provide?
Amplification (if you need it), a shelter for an outdoor wedding if it rains, an area in which I can warm up without disturbing anyone, and a secure place to store my case and belongings. Usually I am able to keep my case with me, so this is not a problem. I will provide my own stand.

Will you come to my rehearsal?
Yes.

When do I pay?
You will be billed for half the cost in advance and the remainder after completion of the wedding. I recommend assigning a family member or member of the wedding party to handle the second payment.

Do you accept checks?
I accept cash and personal checks. Unfortunately, I cannot accept credit cards.
